WHY our CHAPLAINS are CHRISTIANS
We understand this may raise questions.
Why only Christians? Does that mean others aren’t welcome? Or that only Christians can care?
We don’t believe that for a moment.
We know there are countless people - of all faiths and none - who are kind, compassionate, and courageous. People who would be brilliant in a crisis, who would bring deep care to someone on the edge. If that’s you, please know: we see that, and we are grateful for people like you.
Beachy Head Chaplaincy is, at its core, a Christian ministry. Not in a performative way - but in the quiet, steady way our work is shaped. We don’t evangelise. We’re not here to convert anyone. When we meet someone on the edge, our priority is their safety, their dignity, and their humanity.
But we do pray. We do believe that God can soften a heart, bring peace into chaos, guide us towards someone in need, and prompt the right words in a critical moment. We believe He protects us - and those we’re trying to reach - in ways we can’t always explain. And we believe He sustains us too. This is emotionally demanding work, and our shared faith gives us resilience, unity, and a deep sense of calling.
Having a Christian team means we move from the same foundations - in how we listen, how we speak, and how we carry the responsibility of what we do. That unity matters, especially when the stakes are high.
In a society that values inclusion, we also believe it’s okay for different groups to have and maintain the clear identities they were set up with. It is what makes our shared society so rich and diverse. Our ministry is shaped by faith in God - not to keep people out, but to give us shared ground from which to offer His love to anyone we meet.
