About us

The first response

The Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team began in 2004, founded by Ross Hardy. He saw a desperate need - people arriving at the cliffs in deep distress, often alone, often unseen. His vision was simple but radical: to create a system of immediate, open-hearted response. A way to find people before it was too late. A way to offer connection and understanding before solutions.

Over the years, that vision has grown into a team of trained search and rescue chaplains, both employed and voluntary. We patrol on foot and by car, respond to emergency calls, and locate those at risk. Since we began, we’ve responded to over 7,500 people who wanted to end their lives, and helped them to find a more hopeful path forward.

Love in action

We are a Christian charity rooted in action, not agenda. All our chaplains are Christians from local churches, and our faith is what fuels us - it shapes how we see people, and it’s why we keep showing up. But we don’t impose it. We don’t preach. We simply reach out with the love of God, offering time, space, and skilled crisis intervention to anyone whatever their background or situation.

Our mission is to save lives at Beachy Head. We do that by seeking out those in distress, starting conversations, listening well, and encouraging more hopeful paths than suicide. We work alongside emergency services, helping people access the right support when they need it most.

What unites us is not just belief, but conviction: that no one should face the edge alone, and every life has value.

looking ahead

Beachy Head remains a place of staggering beauty - and heartbreaking decisions. As long as people come here in crisis, we will be here to meet them, to listen, and to try to help.

We are growing, adapting, and building for the future: training new chaplains, strengthening partnerships, and working to make our support sustainable for the long term.

Our vision is clear: to help reduce the loss of life to suicide at Beachy Head.

Our values remain the same:

Seeking out

Reaching out

Giving support

Offering hope

Saving lives

…one conversation at a time.
