Valuing Our Volunteers and Families
The Beachy Head Chaplaincy is a front-line search and rescue, and caring service working alongside the Police, Coastguard and Mental Health Services. We look for volunteers who are grounded, calm, and good in a crisis.
It is important to understand that this role is not about excitement or adrenaline; it is about providing a steady, reliable presence to those in distress. We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate compassion and follow instructions clearly. It is a role of service, requiring patience and humility rather than heroics.
information for applicants and supporting families
Volunteering affects the household, so we welcome questions from partners and we encourage applicants to discuss the commitment at home.
We are guided by the promise of Hebrews 6:10:
"God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people."
We take this principle seriously. The volunteer on the cliff can only offer help because of the support provided at home. Therefore, we believe the spiritual impact of every shift belongs just as much to the partner who makes it possible as it does to the Chaplain on patrol.
Partner Appreciation & Community Events
We know that volunteering impacts family time, so we ensure partners are welcome at community events (optional). We hold two key events per year specifically to say "thank you" to our support network.
Summer BBQ: This is a key date in our calendar where the team comes together with families, often attended by civic leaders. It is our way of personally thanking the families for their contribution.
Christmas Dinner: This is a celebration dedicated to the volunteers and their partners. It is our chance as a Chaplaincy to treat you, and acknowledge that the work we do is only possible because of your support at home and on the frontline.
Safety and peace of mind
We understand that partners often worry about safety. We have strict protocols to ensure our team is safe, supervised, and accounted for at all times.
Never Alone: Patrols are always conducted in mandatory pairs. Your partner will always be with a teammate for accountability and safety.
Connected: Teams are in constant radio contact with our base and the Police.
Routine: It is a structured environment. It involves walking, observing, and talking. It is not a dangerous "action" role; it is a care role.
Managing the Time Commitment
We respect that family comes first. Our rota system is designed to be predictable so you can plan your week without surprises.
Fixed Training (8 Weeks):
Tuesdays 7pm – 9pm: Seven classroom learning sessions.
Saturdays 12pm – 2pm: Two sessions only.
The Weekly Routine (Active Duty):
One Shift Per Week: We ask for one 5-hour shift (9am - 2pm, 2pm - 7pm, or 7pm - Midnight). This can be the same shift each week, or change depending on what works best for your home life.
Home Time is Home Time: When the shift ends, the duty ends. We do not ask volunteers to take work home with them.
Planning Ahead: We publish our rotas online 6 weeks in advance. Time-off can be booked, and shifts swapped/cancelled through our online Portal.
